Housing rights

What an ESA means for a cat parent who rents

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is issued by a licensed health professional after an evaluation. For renters whose cat qualifies, it may support a request for reasonable housing accommodations under the Fair Housing Act — even in buildings with no-pet policies.

ESAs do not have the same public access rights as service animals. We'll be clear about what the letter does and doesn't do, so there are no surprises.

  • May live in no-pet buildings

If approved, your ESA letter may support a reasonable-accommodation request under the FHA.

  • May waive pet fees

Breed, size, and weight restrictions — plus monthly pet fees — may be waived if approved.

  • Any cat, any breed

Indoor-only, rescue, mixed — your cat isn't disqualified by breed or size.

  • Digital + PDF documentation

ESA FastPass™ ID for Apple or Google Wallet, plus a downloadable letter you can share with landlords.

FAQ

Common Questions

Does an ESA letter let me keep my cat in a "no pets" building?

It may. Under the Fair Housing Act, if you have a qualifying disability and your ESA is prescribed by a licensed health professional, an ESA letter may support a request for reasonable housing accommodation — including in buildings with no-pet policies. Approval of the request is at the housing provider's discretion based on applicable law. Waivers of no-pet policies and pet fees are only legally required for individuals who have qualifying disabilities.

What does "licensed health professional" mean?

Your evaluation is conducted by a licensed clinician authorized to practice in your state. We don't use the terms "doctor" or "psychiatrist" because the network includes a range of licensed health professionals (LCSW, LMFT, LPC, psychologist) depending on your state.

How long until I get my letter?

Once your evaluation is complete, if approved, documentation can be ready in as soon as 24–48 hours.* Processing times vary by state. AR, CA, IA, LA, and MT residents require a 30-day period per state law.

Can my cat go on planes with an ESA letter?

Airlines are not required to accommodate ESAs, and most U.S. carriers no longer do. Check directly with your airline before booking. ESAs do not have the same public access rights as service animals.

What about vests, tags, or ID cards I see online?

Purchasing vests, ID cards, or tags does not grant your pet service animal or ESA status. Legal protections are based on qualifying documentation and applicable laws — not gear. If you buy accessories from us, they're convenience items, not the source of any rights.

Is the eligibility quiz really free?

Yes. The eligibility quiz is free and takes about two minutes. Based on your responses, you may qualify — you'll see what's next before any payment is required.
